World Parks App Competition
Do you have what it takes to be one of the first in the world to mash up parks data and create an iPhone app? You could win cash and receive promotion of your app by park agencies across the globe.
'World Parks App Competition' will reward the innovative uses of mobile technologies for international development. Up to $AUD5,000 for winning developers is on offer. Parks Victoria and other park agencies have made some basic data available and your entry should focus on health and wellbeing themes. Entries close 31 March 2010.
The winner will be promoted by Parks Victoria and other park agencies around the world as an official app!
Many developers have advised us that allowing sale of their app would make submitting an entry more attractive. You can choose to use the dataset for Albert Park in Victoria Australia via the Download Geographic Data Now link. Alternatively, you can choose to use open source data for other parks you know. If you choose this latter option, you can sell your app via the App Store after entering it in this competition.

World Parks App Competition Winners
Three equal winning entries were selected for their mock-up app entries and were presented with winners cheques at the Healthy Parks Healthy People Congress 16 April 2010. These three concepts can now be refined in scope by land managers and developed into apps for park users.
Jtribe’s entry converts basic website content into a fully featured iPhone app:
- Find your local park
- Find out about events in parks near you
- Safety information and local weather conditions
Bulpadok’s entry, Play a Parx, uses basic park data and creates an international network of parks to play games in:
- For people of all ages and mobility
- To meet in parks and gardens
- To play games in parks
Bulpadok’s entry, My Park, uses basic park data and creates an experience based on an individual’s age, interest and location. The app will:
- Allow park managers to publish data about their parks onto an iPhone app
- Display points of interest such as park amenities, walking trails, meeting points and more
- Provide information on events through a calendar
- Overlay social networking to link visitors to groups of interest in their local park
